Should I use an all rubber infill, silica sand infill or a combination? |
| |
In a perfect world, synthetic grass would need no infill at all. The purpose for infill is to support the blades and add a resilient base to the blades. Sand is used as ballast to increase the weight of the grass and keep it on the ground.
The Lawn Arranger does not promote the use of sand infill on anything other than sad-filled putting greens. Silica sand can be abrasive to the blades, inhibit the drainage of pet waste, and silica dust can be a long-term respiratory health risk. Instead of using sand as ballast for the turf, we recommend the use heavy-duty landscape spikes to anchor the base of the turf directly to the ground. This holds the turf firmly while eliminating the need for sand as ballast. If you prefer a sand infill, we do suggest a combination of sand and crumb rubber for comfort and usability.
While some products are touted as “no-infill”, there is rarely an instance where infill would not be beneficial. The Lawn Arranger encourages you to add an infill of crumb rubber to most all turf products. The difference is that some products will need only a small amount (1/8-1/4 lb per square foot) while some may need more (1 lb or more per square foot). No matter what the amount, we recommend only using crumb rubber as infill. Especially if your application carries a safety concern or fall rating, then rubber is the best choice.
There are applications of some putting greens that require the use of sand infill. We provide a full installation guide to properly adding layers of sand to a putting green. An alternative is to use a non-infill putting green product.
